The ‘COUGAR’s COMING OUT BIG TIME !

Amidst the sadness of loosing my two oldies comes the light at the end of the tunnel - ‘Cito’ recently made up into a breed champion in March after our travels to the Gauteng Championship shows breezed in to win TWO TIMES BEST OF BREED OVER THE THREE DAY CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW WEEKEND IN KWA-ZULU NATAL.

So proud I was of my young boy holding his own in the Champion male class against his older rivals – AND ESPECIALLY UNDER MR ALBERT WIGHT – WELL RESPECTED AND WELL REKNOWNED BEST IN SHOW CRUFTS JUDGE ! oh wow, just a great moment.

Cito’s second win for the weekend came again on Sunday, this time under well respected Mr S Wilberg (UK) who loved his sheer beauty, power and balance. Thank you to both judges for recognizing this up and coming young male, and helping him up the ladder !

Cito goes Best of Breed!

Cito goes Best of Breed!   FALKOR THE ‘RAIN MASTER’
Master of the ring he certainly was at this weekends Kwa-Zulu Natal May Championship Show weekend……………..Falkor strutted his stuff and oozed confidence in the Open Male Class and competed happily against his rivals clocking up TWO CC’s (championship points) out of the TWO Championship shows he was entered for. We gave him a break on the Sunday but he sure is coming back for more !
Falkor is a son of Luck Dragon and Magnolia Star.

SNOWEY RIVER ARCTIC DIAMOND
Baby Balou tried his best to ‘focus’ on his Puppy Foundation Assessment Test on Saturday afternoon after showing Cito and Falkor – red faced and hot from the scorching sun in the showring, I dashed to Balou’s training school to do the puppy test which he passed with flying colours ! Judge Merle Bounds was particularly pleased with the little ones who provided us all with lots of laughter. This test is a ‘mini’ Canine Good Citizen test and is super for youngsters. And so Balou has his first Rosette and Certificate too. Well done Baby Balou !
YVONNE MEINTJES BREED SEMINAR AUSTRALIA
Yvonne Meintjes is doing a presentation on the White Swiss Shepherd Dog in Australia, Sydney on the 5th May for all interested trainee judges/exhibitors and admirers of the breed………..we have good news that some breeders have even booked flights to be there! A big thank you to Yvonne for being such a great supporter of our breed and in helping to promote our lovely dogs.

When a flag flies half mast, you know that a Lord and First Lady are no longer.

This is my Tribute...

THERE’S NO LOVE LIKE THE LOVE OF A FATHER FOR HIS DAUGHTER !

On a whistle stop tour of South Africa, we welcomed Jan Jongeneel from the kennel ‘Of The Lovely White Shepherd’ in Holland to our province Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Time was short and although we only had one day to entertain our visitor we took the opportunity to introduce him to our dogs and of course, his special girl Savannah (whom we call our ‘special piece of Cheese). Savannah and Jan were completely focused on each other at times and shared some special kisses………as I watched my Cheese, I couldn’t help thinking – mmm, I think she knows this is her ‘Dad’ from Holland !

My dogs were completely comfortable with Jan and he showed his interest and passion for our breed during his visit. It was great to spend the day talking to Jan who is clearly knowledgeable on our breed.

It was a very hot day and so we couldn’t take the dogs touring with us, however, we enjoyed the sunshine and Jan was taken to see our traditional Zulu Dancing amidst the rolling green hills of THE VALLEY OF A THOUSAND HILLS, a big tourist attraction. These particular Zulu’s are from a family where generations have danced before them. They danced the ‘courtship’ dance and explained that a man has to buy 11 cows to pay for his bride ! Jan was quite amused at this.

We exchanged gifts and I have a lovely collection of mugs with WSSD prints on and in turn the Jongeneels received a South African made Show Shampoo and a bag of locally made ‘Assagai’ coffee. ‘Ja, its lekker by die see’ as we say in Afrikaans !

We ended the day with a pot of tea and cheese cake at the Tropicana Hotel on Durban’s beachfront – the beachfront looked ‘confused’ to say the least with all the paving and reconstruction going on – anything but attractive for visitors but WE’RE JUST GETTING READY FOR THE FIFA WORLD CUP !

So thank you Jan for sharing your time with us and we hope you enjoyed our country……….by the way Jan, Cito has stolen Savannah’s ‘chicken’ ! All night on Tuesday I kept hearing the toy chicken ‘squeak, squeak’ – I could not sleep !

All in all a great day.

A TRIBUTE TO AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN – IT WAS AN HONOR TO WALK WITH YOU

It was a sad moment for all of us in South African dogdom to have heard of the passing on of Captain Kenneth Hogg. Ken was a great supporter of our breed from the time of inception with The Kennel Union and he was a well respected judge not only on our local circuit but internationally as well.Ken was born in 1934, a proud Scotsman ! (and later became a Captain of the deep blue sea’s). I would just like to express my heartfelt sympathies to Edith who has lost a wonderful husband and to Rhonaid who has lost a fantastic father. I know I for one, will miss his sense of humor, his wisdom and role as peacemaker too.
He was a truly remarkable man. Rhonaid, you couldn’t have done the tribute to your dad and your sister any better – it stirred the hearts of all of us. As I sat watching snippets of Ken’s life played on the big screen at his Memorial Service, tears of absolute sadness overcame me – he was as large as life itself and I always felt he played the role of ‘father’ to many of us girls in KZN.

It was an awesome moment for me when Ken awarded me with the medal and title in 2004,KUSA National Herding Dog and an incredibly humble moment for me when I saw Luck Dragonand myself with Ken up on the big screen at his final service – I guess he will never really know how muchthat meant to me.

I leave you all with a photo of ONE GREAT MAN, IT WAS AN HONOR TO WALK WITH HIM – and ONE LITTLE DOG THAT HAD A GREAT FUTURE – little did we know that both although special were to leave us so soon.

GOODBYE KEN, give my boy a big love from his human mom !

Ken & Chango
