Of Days Gone By

In 1996, at the World Championship Speciality Show for White Shepherds held in Germany, two young girls exhibited their dogs – excited, nervous and keen to meet each once again – old rivals in the ring but old friends too, neither fully established as a breeder but both having an unbelievable passion for our wonderful breed. That passion has lasted for over 15 years for both friends, loosing contact with one another and then quite by chance discovering how the future turned out for us both ! It was with great excitement that I received an e-mail from Martina Seifert owner of many times winner in the breed ring Iwanna-Roanna of White Mountain, Austria – a favourite of mine at the time and a lovely female that helped inspire me deeper into the world of White Shepherds. At this big event I asked Martina to sit in on a photo with Diva and she willingly agreed……..wow, I was so honoured. Martina went on to establish her kennel name as ‘von der Nellenburg’ and breed some truly wonderful dogs including Alitza-Allina von der Nellenburg and Buffalo-Bill. I returned to my hometown in South Africa and established the breed here and continue with my kennel name Snowey River becoming a household name for our breed. Today Martina and her family are the proud owners and breeders of WSSD’s ‘von der Nellenbande’ (www.nellenbande.de) as well as horses and beautiful Birman cats – how interesting that we still share the same interests and passions for our animals. We both miss our ‘old girls’ Iwanna and Diva but have to smile because they were so much a part of our lives for many years.
